Care
To preserve the beauty and durability of your handloom-woven blouse:
- Hand wash in cold water (max. 30°C) with mild detergent, free of bleach.
- Do not machine wash or tumble dry — vibrations and high temperatures can damage the handwoven fabric and embroidery.
- Air dry naturally, laid flat in the shade, to prevent fading and distortion.
- Iron on the reverse side, at medium temperature, preferably using a pressing cloth to protect the fabric.
- Store in a dry, airy place, preferably folded rather than hung, to protect traditional seams.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, perfume, or deodorant directly on the fabric to prevent stains and discoloration.
This piece is more than a garment — it is a work of textile art. Caring for it properly will extend its life and keep the craft alive for generations to come.
How is made?
The making of a traditional Romanian blouse begins long before the first stitch of embroidery. Artisans prepare fine cotton threads and carefully arrange them on the loom (război de țesut), creating the urzeală (warp), which is the backbone of the fabric. Using suveicile (wooden shuttles), the weft threads are passed back and forth, patiently interlacing with the warp. Every movement of the loom is guided by hand and foot, producing a fabric that is both strong and delicate, carrying within it the rhythm of tradition.
The embroidery itself is not simply applied but woven into the fabric. The artisan works thread by thread, following ancient motifs that symbolize protection, fertility, and connection with nature. The geometric and floral patterns are achieved through age-old techniques, each stitch reflecting centuries of cultural memory.
Once the fabric is fully woven and embroidered, the blouse is shaped and assembled entirely by hand. The seams are closed using a distinctive technique called cheițe (“little keys”), a decorative and functional stitch characteristic of Romania’s ancient blouses. This artisanal finish not only strengthens the garment but also adds a refined, symbolic detail that marks it as authentic.
Each blouse, from loom to final stitch, is a slow, meditative process that can take weeks to complete. No two are ever identical, making every piece a living heirloom—woven, embroidered, and finished by hand.

Meet the Artisans
Arta was the last workshop in the country producing textiles entirely at the războiul de țesut, the traditional weaving loom. Every thread, every panel of broderie spartă, every closure — all worked by hand, by women who learned the craft from their mothers, who learned it from theirs.
