The Ukrainian wax wedding wreath — vinok — is one of the oldest surviving bridal traditions in Eastern Europe. Worn since the late nineteenth century by brides across Poltava, Chernihiv, and Kyiv regions, the wreath was never decoration alone. Every bloom carried a meaning. Every bead, a wish. Wax sealed the promise of permanence.

Our "Wedding" wreath is handcrafted from this archive — recreated petal by petal from photographs and museum samples of the late 1800s and early 1900s, when bridal crowns spoke a language of their own.

The Craft

Each flower is hand-cut from paper, coated in layers of pure paraffin until the surface achieves the soft, luminous quality of wax fruit. Petals are bent, shaped, and pressed by hand — no two are identical. The foundation is fine wire wrapped in paper, arched into the traditional crescent silhouette that frames the bride's brow.

Beads and metallic foil — applied by candlelight — finish each element. The wreath is built one bloom at a time. Total making time: approximately 40 hours per piece.

How to Wear

Traditionally worn high on the crown of the head, the wax wreath rests softly above the brow line, with ribbons cascading down the back over the veil. Equally striking with a handwoven linen ie for a heritage ceremony, a modern silk slip dress for understated bridal elegance, or a vintage embroidered gown for a fully ceremonial look.

The Heritage

In 2020, the art of crafting the Ukrainian wax bridal wreath was inscribed on Ukraine's National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage — a recognition that places this practice alongside the Romanian ie (UNESCO, 2022) as one of Eastern Europe's most precious living traditions.

Fewer than a dozen artisans worldwide still master this technique. Each wreath we curate is signed, dated, and accompanied by a certificate of provenance.
