CURATOR'S NOTE
Mustard linen, sleeveless, self-tie belt, English collar, two patch pockets. Hand-embroidered from collar to hem in tobacco thread — circular medallions on the skirt, botanical borders along the placket. Named after Sarah Bernhardt. 138cm length.
The Sarah is named after Sarah Bernhardt — Mucha's muse, the woman whose face defined an era. The embroidery on this dress speaks the same visual language as his posters: radial medallions, botanical borders, ornament that moves like it grew there.
Cut from mustard linen with a clean A-line silhouette. English collar. Sleeveless. Self-tie belt at the waist. Two side patch pockets. Four large hand-embroidered medallions anchor the skirt; a continuous leaf-and-vine border runs the full length of the placket. All in deep tobacco thread on mustard ground — tonal, not contrasting, so the embroidery reads as part of the cloth rather than applied to it.
